Before you go to the Reedy Fork dog park

Dog parks can be great ways to exercise, stimulate, and socialize dogs, according to the Animal Humane Society. But the nonprofit recommends a few things to consider before visiting a dog park.

Not all dogs enjoy playing with unfamiliar pooches, especially if they’ve reached social maturity (2-3 years of age). Avoid taking young puppies who have not yet received a rabies vaccination to dog parks. They could also be frightened by large, older dogs.

Is your dog aggressive toward people or other dogs? Think twice about bringing Fido to a dog park. Your dog should also be obedient. That’s because if play gets too rough or a fight breaks out, you want to make sure your dog will obey your commands.

Keep children close and under direct supervision. They should not run around, scream or encourage dogs to chase them, which could result in serious injury. According to the Animal Humane Society, not all dogs are familiar with children and may perceive running and screaming as prey behavior. They can also wander among groups of playing dogs and get knocked over or stepped on. Aside from possibly getting injured, that may create a long-term fear of dogs in general.
